Misconception #3: Birth parents will never know anything about their child after the adoption becomes final. FALSE

There is a range of openness in adoption today. While some couples prefer total secrecy; others choose full disclosure of identity and information. In an open adoption, letters, gifts, and photographs from the birth parents can be exchanged throughout a child's life.

Misconception #4: Adoption is irresponsible. FALSE

Many birth parents feel they must suffer the consequences of the "mistake" of conception by taking the responsibility for parenting and not passing it on to someone else. Making the responsible decision to do what is best for the child is a major step toward responsible parenting, even if that means placing the child in a loving home.

Misconception #5: The birth parents will eventually forget the child they released for adoption. FALSE

The birth parents do not forget their child but have the assurance that, based on the circumstances at the time, they made a mature and loving decision.

Misconception #6: Adopted children grow up to have serious psychological disorders. FALSE

Research has shown that there is no difference between the emotional stability of adopted or non-adopted children.

What are the rights of the father?

The birth father's rights are equal to the birth mother's. If the birth father chooses not to be a part of the adoption decision, a court ruling may terminate his parental rights.
